SDM’s Flip Whitworth and Stephanie Kover will be speaking at the Texas Bankers Association’s Real Estate and Oil & Gas Conference in San Antonio on Friday, March 24, 2017. Flip and Stephanie will cover surface estate issues related to Texas Relinquishment Act lands, including recent developments in General Land Office leasing policy and procedure, surface damage use agreement requirements, and case law defining which substances belong to the surface estate for mineral classified lands.  More information about the Seminar can be found here.

Scott Douglass & McConnico Presents Annual Oil & Gas Seminar on April 14

Scott Douglass & McConnico’s annual oil and gas seminar, “Oil & Gas Regulation in Texas,” will be held April 14 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Austin. The seminar is designed to present an overview of current Railroad Commission rules and procedures, related litigation issues, and other oil and gas issues that will be useful to attorneys, engineers, geologists, landmen, and others whose business brings them in contact with the Railroad Commission of Texas or the General Land Office.

The firm has hosted the popular seminar for more than 30 years. Scott Douglass & McConnico attorneys John Camp, Jim Cowden, Doug Dashiell, Mark HannaJohn HicksOlga Kobzar, Bryan Lauer, Carroll MartinDavin McGinnis, John Soule, and Flip Whitworth will speak at the event. Among other topics, they will discuss Railroad Commission rules, regulations and hearing procedures, drilling permits and Rule 37/38 exceptions, horizontal drilling, comingling, voluntary and forced pooling, retained acreage clause issues, surface and subsurface use, and inactive well issues. Flip Whitworth Selected for the 2016 Ernest E. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award by the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas, and Energy Law

Flip WhitworthThe Texas Journal of Oil, Gas, and Energy Law has selected Philip “Flip” Whitworth as the 2016 recipient of the prestigious Ernest E. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award. The Award honors legal practitioners who have made significant contributions to the oil, gas, and energy industry and participated in the advancement of natural resources law, policy, or scholarship. The Award is named after Professor Ernest E. Smith, Rex G. Baker Centennial Chair in Natural Resources Law at the University of Texas School of Law. The first recipient of this Award was the late Frank Douglass, founding partner of Scott, Douglass & McConnico. Flip will be honored and presented with the Award at the Journal’s 11th Annual Symposium Banquet on January 28, 2016. More information about the Journal and its Annual Symposium can be found here.

Flip Whitworth to Lecture University of Texas Law Students on Oil & Gas Law

Professor Ernest Smith has invited SDM’s Flip Whitworth to return as a regular guest lecturer to his Oil & Gas Law course at The University of Texas School of Law. His topics will include horizontal drilling and Texas Railroad Commission regulation of oil and gas drilling and production.

Becky Miller named 2016 Austin “Lawyer of the Year” in Natural Resources Law and Flip Whitworth named 2016 “Lawyer of the Year” in Oil & Gas Law

The 2016 U.S. News – Best Lawyers® Report has named Becky Miller as Austin’s 2016 “Lawyer of the Year” in the area of Natural Resources Law and Flip Whitworth as Austin’s 2016 “Lawyer of the Year” in the area of Oil & Gas Law. Both Becky and Flip are board certified in Oil, Gas and Mineral law. Becky has practiced exclusively in the firm's oil, gas and energy practice since she joined the firm in 1981. She has represented operators, lessees, non-operating working interest owners and lessors in oil,  gas & energy litigation. She also serves as a mediator and arbitrator. Flip joined the firm in 1977 when the firm’s practice centered on oil and gas litigation and regulation. His practice continues to focus primarily on oil and gas regulatory issues and he frequently speaks and writes on oil and gas regulatory topics.
